These records were made for COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY PRESS “shortly before his death”  on December 5th 1931, The records were issued in 1932 ( possible 5 Dec. 1932). On the label : < Columbia University Phonograph Record No. 1 > VACHEL LINDSAY reading his poem … > < As originally recorded for Professor WILLIAM CABELL GREET Barnard College, Columbia University Copyright 1932 by Columbia University Press With the Permission of The Macmillan Co. N.Y. As Publishers of Selected Poems of Vachel Lindsay, 1931 Copyright by The Macmillan Co Use a new, steel needle for each playing >   On the reverse of all three records: < VACHEL LINDSAY RECORDS > “During his life-time Vachel Lindsay was properly disdainful of printed poetry except as a libretto to be followed while hearing sounded poetry. His sprightly stage directions, use of bold capitals, and suggested orchestrations “Grand chorus of all instruments, tambourines to the foreground, “ stirred the imagination, but the inner ear of the ordinary reader could hear only the faintest echo of the rhapsodical effects the composer intended. The printed page held only the bare bones of his verses; not until they were clothed in the sensuous, glowing flesh of his own chanting did they spring into full life.” – D.R. DARRELL > < PUBLISHER’S NOTE  Shortly before his death, Vachel Lindsay read most of his important poems for recording by Professor Greet. The original records are in the the possession of the Columbia University Library. Some of these have already been issued by Columbia University Press, and others will be issued as the demand warrants. Persons interested are accordingly invited to write to the Press, stating their preference as to the order in which unpublished records of the following poems should be made available: The Blacksmith’s Serenade The Booker Washington Trilogy: ………….. > And a  list of 38 poems. < COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY PRESS COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY NEW YORK  >
